SOS Orinoco ha documentado recientemente una mina de aproximadamente 5,8 hect\u00e1reas frente a Playa Linda, dentro de Canaima.<\/p>\n<p>La organizaci\u00f3n sostiene que la actividad minera representa una amenaza directa para los ecosistemas, los cuerpos de agua y las comunidades ind\u00edgenas que habitan en la regi\u00f3n. Seg\u00fan sus investigaciones, la expansi\u00f3n de la miner\u00eda en el sur del pa\u00eds est\u00e1 relacionada con una pol\u00edtica que ha permitido o facilitado el avance del extractivismo en territorios ambientalmente sensibles.<\/p>\n<p>SOS Orinoco tambi\u00e9n ha cuestionado las restricciones impuestas a la supervisi\u00f3n internacional de la situaci\u00f3n ambiental en Canaima. En julio, la organizaci\u00f3n denunci\u00f3 que las autoridades venezolanas manten\u00edan una estrategia para impedir una misi\u00f3n de la Unesco destinada a evaluar los da\u00f1os ocasionados por la miner\u00eda ilegal dentro del parque.<\/p>\n<p>La preocupaci\u00f3n ambiental se extiende al Arco Minero del Orinoco y otras zonas del sur de Venezuela, donde organizaciones han advertido durante a\u00f1os sobre los efectos de la explotaci\u00f3n aur\u00edfera, incluyendo deforestaci\u00f3n, contaminaci\u00f3n de r\u00edos y afectaciones a comunidades ind\u00edgenas.<\/p>\n<p>SOS Orinoco insiste en que la protecci\u00f3n de Canaima requiere detener la expansi\u00f3n de la miner\u00eda ilegal, garantizar la vigilancia ambiental y permitir mecanismos independientes de evaluaci\u00f3n de los da\u00f1os.
